We have been talking about getting bunk beds for the boys for a while now. But I was waiting for Leo's sleep to be more consistent. For the past month or so, he has been sleeping really soundly through the nights. Also, for the past 2 weeks I have been able to put Leo down drowsy and let him fall asleep on his own. Honestly, I thought pediatricians were lying when they told me it was possible to do, and I know every kid is different, but finally it worked! Henry still has been waking up about 50% of the nights and Jon goes down to sleep on the floor in Henry's room, so we also knew that was not a sustainable practice (though it had been going on for the past 2 years nearly). While we didn't have the bunk bed yet, we decided to move the boys in together and convert Leo's crib into a toddler bed. Jon and I were both nervous about how it would work out.
The first night we started our new routine. Henry got just 1 bottle, and I nursed Leo, while Jon read a book. Our goal was also to make bedtime with just one parent more of a possibility. After the 3 books, I laid Leo down in his bed and kissed them both goodnight. I stayed in the room until everyone fell asleep. Henry woke up around 10:30pm and Jon put him back to bed. Both boys woke up at 5:30am, and I was worried they'd be up for the morning, but we told them to go back to bed and they did and they slept until 7:30am!! Success!
The best part is Leo, "shhh's" his brother to go to sleep. Love that they are policing each other, instead of me.
Ultimately we are hopeful that this will help them continue to build their bond as brothers and now we have a separate play room for the boys too! Win-win!
