Always an island girl at heart

It feels like the end of an era. My parents, without even putting their house on the market, sold their long time home on Sauvie Island. Not only had it been their home for the past 27 years, but it they have been living on the island for nearly 40 years. And its been the only home I have known, since we moved their when I was about 4 years old. I'm not going to lie, it almost feels like the loss of a family member. I have had difficulty fully processing this loss, as evidenced my numerous dreams about my life on the island since their departure.

I think the thing that makes me feel the saddest is that Henry and baby nĂºmero dos won't know their Nana and Papa's home and the idyllic agrarian lifestyle that accompanies it. From looking out the windows to a perfect pastoral setting to summers spent bike riding in the drive way, to eating fresh ripe corn right of the stalk and beach bonfire building. There is an undeniable charm about island living.

And while there are definitely some benefits to having my parents move now. Like the fact that they are in there 70s and it is probably a good time to downsize. And they now live about a mile from our house, which makes childcare pick ups and drop offs ridiculously easy. There is still a haunting nostalgia about this transition.

Since their big move, I think I have been out to visit to island even more than when my parents lived there. I think mostly to try to preserve any kind of connection that I have with this beloved place. And while Jon and I had vain hopes of buying and remodeling my parent's house, it just is not the right time in our lives for that. And its time to let go of that house, at least. However, it will never change how much I truly love and cherish this magical place. And I will always be an island girl at heart.

Just a few pictures of our last day at the house:
