12 months old: UNO

With or without my permission, we have reached this huge milestone. Henry is 1 year old! I think I have procrastinated writing this blog post hoping to extend Henry's baby-ness and live in the denial just a bit longer that our little one is not so little any more. Here is just a quick trip down memory lane from last April, as we welcomed our bambino into our lives.

I found the perfect birthday t-shirt of Henry. I loved it because I figured it was something he would wear more than one time, unlike many of the other cheesy 1st birthday outfits (no offense if that's what you chose for your kiddo). Our gift to Henry was this little radio flyer wagon.

I looked into fancy designer cakes around Portland, to which they are no shortage, but ended up deciding to go with good old Freddie's cake. For 1st birthdays they provide a special "smash cake", just for your little one to dig into.
His birthday cake was complete with a photo-shopped picture (courtesy of Jon) with all of Henry's favorite things including dogs and pinwheels.

Watching Henry explore the cake was hysterical! It was like a total sensory experience.
Jon had to show him it was ok to eat.
What fun!

So, as I give myself a chance to reflect on this past year, I think the word that comes up is gratitude. I'm grateful for the birth experience, how empowered I felt by it. I'm grateful to know Henry and to be his mama. I'm grateful how it has allowed our marriage to grow and evolve. I'm grateful every morning I wake up next to this sweet little boy and see his smile. I'm grateful for the lessons learned over this past year, in patience, love and trusting my own instincts. And I'm so grateful I'm not alone in the journey. I could not have survived this past year with the love and support of family, friends, co-workers and all the people who have lent a hand along the way. Next adventure: toddler-hood.
