what happened.

I struggled to decide on a title for this post, but it was challenging to create something clever for such an event. So I settled on "What Happened", and its several meanings. There is the "what happened", the statement and explanation. There is the "what happened?", the genuine inquiry into what occured. Lastly there is the "what the %$&# happened?", as in absolute shock that happens after a traumatic event.

10/27/12 is the day that we celebrated closing on our house exactly one year ago. Its also the day we attended a family Halloween party. And it goes down as the scariest day of my life.

After the Halloween party, around 8:30pm we headed home to get little H down at a reasonable time. As we headed down Highway 26 toward the tunnels, the rain started to pick up. What I remember after that are flashes and imagines. I was in the back seat with Henry. We were in the far left lane. Then there was the breaking cars to the right of us. There was the white car sliding/hydroplaning sideways in front of us. There was the "oh, %$&#" moment where I realized that a crash was imminent. Then the impact. There was the smoke from the air bag going off and blood running down Jon's face. There was Henry's cry as he woke from his pleasant slumber in shear terror. There was the man who can up to car to ask if we were ok, to which I replied (or more like yelled), "call 911, call 911, call 911."

We all made it to the hospital, Jon took the majority of the injuries with 4 stitches on his nose and some abrasions from the air bag. I have a nasty case of whiplash and some bruising from the seat belt. Henry came out relatively unaffected. Thank god for good car seats!!!! I am beyond grateful that we all managed to walk away from the accident in one piece. Like any scary experience, I feel a renewed sense of appreciation for those I love and this very life. Car seats and cars are replaceable. Loved ones are not. So, in the spirit of gratitude for the month of November, I hope to hug and love those ones around me a little more dearly.

And here is what is left of our car:
